Music in general and percussion in particular have played an important role in Janne Tuomi’s life for longer than he can remember. Born in 1973 in Tampere, he was taken to concerts by his musician father already as a child. This meant Janne got firsthand experience of music ranging from Bob Dylan to The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra to The Modern Jazz Quartet to Deep Purple before turning eighteen.
With Elvin Jones, Buddy Rich, Mitch Mitchell and Buddy Miles as his primary influences, Tuomi commenced taking drum, vibraphone and classical percussion lessons at the age of twelve after studying piano, violin and music theory for six years. At that time his biggest influences were Edward Vesala, Ippe Kätkä and Milt Jackson, all of whom the budding musician had also witnessed live.
After playing with brass bands and rock groups and co-founding the hard bop team Bird’s Eggs with multi-instrumentalist Kusti Vuorinen and saxophonist Masa Orpana, it took a couple of years and omnivorous preparation in varied environments for Tuomi to find his calling.
The epiphany came in 1995 through improvising with reedsman Jone Takamäki, then riding hard on the success of unique free jazz/rock band Krakatau. A little later, the deal was sealed for good after Tuomi met Jorma Tapio. The woodwind specialist became Tuomi’s first de facto mentor and there was no turning back.
Close co-operation with Vuorinen and Orpana continued and work with their free jazz outfit Moksha proved an important stage for all. 1997’s private lessons from Edward Vesala were also of particular significance for the percussionist’s percussionist who has in addition studied with Ed Thigpen, John Bergamo, Bobby Previte and Noël Saïzonou.
After the turn of the Millennium, Tuomi has expanded hungrily and worked with e.g. avant rock team Circle and other projects led by the band’s mastermind, Jussi Lehtisalo. Of particular note is the 2006 trio session with Hans-Joachim Irmler of Faust fame.
In recent years, the all-around rhythm master has also taken time to teach at the Tampere Conservatory and work with the likes of the Zagros Ensemble, the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra and others in settings like the Viitasaari Time of Music, the Tampere Biennale and the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival.
In 2006, Tuomi became one of the co-founders of Osuma. Their own shows aside, the percussion ensemble frequently collaborates with other groups. Current triumphs include a 2012 appearance with the defun sensemble at the Huddersfield festival in the UK and a 2014 performance of Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra.
Another milestone in 2006 was participating in John Zorn’s Cobra workshop at the Musica Nova event in Helsinki and performing the man’s compositions as part of Tuomi’s first ever solo tour of Finland.
Work with Vuorinen and Orpana continues with ethno-jazz-brass band Rakka. The critically acclaimed group has released the albums Soutu (2012) and Mykorritsan valtakunta (2014) and performed in e.g. London, New York and Berlin.
Janne Tuomi appears on more than 60 albums and has three solo percussion releases to his name: Approaching (2003), Resonance (2008) and elg (2009).

Muun muassa Edward Vesalalta, Ed Thigpeniltä, John Bergamolta, Bobby Previteltä ja Noël Saïzonoulta hakemiaan oppeja soveltaen Tuomi on täydentänyt tietopankkiaan noista ajoista tähän päivään.
